Introduction:
Indonesian woodcarving artist I Made Sukariawan, born and raised on the island of Bali, will introduce his audience to the sacred Barong Kèt: a Balinese mythological animal known for its peculiar mask and used during rituals. This workshop provides insight into the production process and ritual use of the leonine creature. Furthermore, it gives participants the chance to make their own colourful version of the Barong mask, which can be brought home as a souvenir.

Background of the speaker:
I Made Sukariawan grew up on the island of Bali, Indonesia, where he learnt the art of wood carving from a very young age onwards. He worked, for over a decade, in the tourism industry (Club Med) and travelled many parts of Southeast Asia together with his Taiwanese wife Mrs Ling Fang. Pak Made is currently based in the Southern Taiwanese town Kaohsiung where he runs his own carving studio.
