Introduction:
Dances in Indonesia represent the country's diversity of ethnicities and cultures. In the Indonesian community, dances have played important roles and have become part of life. For example, court dances are performed in royal palaces either for royal ritual or ceremonies, welcoming important guests, or entertainment. Folk dances are popular among common people as entertainment or as part of rituals. In some areas, dances were also performed along with religious ceremonies. There are more than 1,300 ethnic groups in Indonesia and each ethnic group has its own dances’ aesthetic/characteristics. Thus, there are approximately more than 3,000 original dances’ characteristics in Indonesia.
The dance workshop is to introduce Javanese and Balinese Dances as a practice of a belief to students and the community at National Chengchi University. In this workshop, the participants will be introduced to the basic dance movements and will be able to perform a short Javanese/Balinese dance repertoire (3-4 minutes).
